How can using barcodes benefit my business and which standard should we be using?

The use of linear and QR codes and the data within

A barcode is a way of representing data in a visual, machine-readable form. Invented by Norman Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver and patented in the USA in 1951. Barcodes are scanned by optical scanners, and over time have been developed to incorporate rectangles, dots, hexagons and other patterns known as matrix or 2D barcodes, which can hold complex data and information.
